Intuition Vs. Anxiety

Everyone always tells us to “listen to our intuition” but it can be really difficult to tell the difference between our intuition, and anxiety or fear. Accessing our intuition can keep us safe, and grounded. Anxiety can keep us stuck, or make us run from things that might be good for us out of fear. Unfortunately, being able to tell the difference is a skill that requires a ton of practice. However, it is not impossible! Tuning in to your intuition can be truly life changing, and the key is feeling into your body. 

Intuition

Intuition is often describes as a feeling of knowing. It is typically more of a gut feeling, and can be very subtle. An intuitive feeling is usually accompanied with a feeling of calm and being self assured. Have you ever just KNOWN what the right decision to make was, and the thought of doing something other than that just felt wrong? That was most likely your intuition. Maybe if others ask you why you made that decision, you find it easy to explain and it revolves around your best interest, instead of fear.

Anxiety

Anxiety can feel like tightness in your chest, throat, or stomach and can even cause nausea sometimes. It is often accompanied by self-consciousness, fear and restlessness. You might find yourself feeling a quick moving energy that makes you feel disoriented and scared. Then, you will most likely have fears and doubts about yourself. You might find yourself with narratives that cause you to feel more fearful and anxious. 

Questions to ask yourself to clarify if you are feeling anxiety, or intuition:

  1. How do I feel in my body? 
  2. How do I usually feel in my body when I am anxious about something?
  3. Is the narrative going through my mind one of self-consciousness and fear, or grounding and knowing?
  4. Are my past emotions and experiencing influencing how I feel about this?
  5. Am I holding onto (or letting go of) something out of fear, or out of excitement to move forward?
